The 76th BAFTA Awards took place last night at the Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Center in the UK capital. The drama On the Western Front, directed by Edward Berger from Germany, won the prize for the best film. The main prize winner was the film based on the cult novel by Erich Maria Remarque.
In addition to the best film, the creators of the cassette won awards in the categories “Best Director’s Work”, “Best Non-English Film”, “Best Adapted Screenplay”, “Best Cinematography”, “Best Film Score” and “Best Sound”.
The film made history by winning the most BAFTA awards for a foreign language film, including the top award of the night. The Netflix project won 7 of the 14 awards it applied for. This matches the record set by the non-English language film Crouching Tiger in 2001.
The film’s director made an emotional statement while accepting the award. Berger noted that Remarque’s novel has not lost its relevance even in the 21st century.
On the Western Front, Quiet tells the story of young boys who are poisoned by right-wing nationalist propaganda. They go to war thinking it’s an adventure. And war is anything but an adventure. That’s one of the messages of Remarque’s novel, and when we started making this film, it seemed like an important message even 100 years after the book was published,” said Edward.
“Banshee Inisherina” and “Elvis” also achieved success at BAFTA. Martin McDonough and Baz Luhrmann’s films won four “Bronze Masks” each. Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her performance in Todd Field’with Tar. Austin Butler won Best Actor for his role as the King of Rock and Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
The supporting actress award went to Kerry Condon (The Banshee of Inisherina) and Barry Keoghan won the male award for the same film. Damien Chazelle’s drama “Babylon” won the prize for the best work of the production designer. James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Path of Water” won the award for best visual effects. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was declared the best animated film.
The event in London was attended by members of the royal family. Kate Middleton pulled a cheeky stunt when she patted Prince William on the buttocks.
