We have all been excited to hear something wonderful from our parents in our childhood the story of Cinderella, sincerely and sincerely sympathized with her, suffering the attacks of insensitive cousins. And at the same time, most of all, they wanted to be in the place of this poor woman and also to lose the unfortunate glass jar, so that later they would gain much more – the love of a handsome prince. For many girls, this fairy tale has become almost the ideal of every love story, and it is not surprising that they would like to see it, if not in life, then at least on the screen. Therefore, film adaptations of Cinderella began to be replaced as soon as the cinema gave them such an opportunity.
Cinderella cinema, which told the original story of the fairy tale, began to appear in the late 19th century – even when progress did not allow characters to speak from the screen. The first attempt to show Cinderella in the cinema was made in 1898 – the Englishman George Albert Smith made a silent short film that told about this story. In the future, American filmmakers fought Cinderella several times, but in 1914 everything stopped.

Cinderella did not return to cinema until the middle of the last century and made her debut on Soviet screens. In 1947, a feature-length film shot by Nadezhda Kosheverova and Mikhail Shapir was released – the directors did not deviate a single step from the classics and were able to transfer all fairy tales and the magic of history into their image.
The script was created by the writer Yevgeny Schwartz, who a little earlier became the author of the play about Cinderella. And the role of this poor woman, who could be envied by anyone at the end of the whole story, went Yanina Zheyma – fair-haired, pretty Soviet actress who played her heroine very touchingly. According to the script, Alexei Konsovsky became her handsome prince, and the role of stepmother was played by the legendary Faina Ranevskaya. The film turned out to be so successful and popular with the audience that even in our modern years they decided to restore it in color – in half a century of existence, the film on which the film was shot was not in the best condition.
Disney’s Cinderella (1950)
A few years before the release of the Soviet film about Cinderella, the Walt Disney studios remembered the traditional plot: in 1944, they began work on creating a cartoon based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale. A lot of effort was invested in the cartoon, because the animators spent six whole years on their Cinderella – the result of their work was shown on the screens only in 1950. Then he led the process himself. Walt Disney, a lot of hope was put into the cartoon – $ 2.5 million was spent on its production, and it was a very impressive amount for the studio to meet expectations. For this, Disney tried to minimize all risks and strictly stick to the classics, because viewers who were just getting used to cinema would not like unexpected plot twists and contradictions with the original story. But it all turned out for the best: the box office revenue of 4 million dollars allowed Disney to continue creating unforgettable animated works.
Since then, many directors have taken up the classics, who wanted to present the well-known story even more colorfully and better and make their own film about Cinderella. Recently, however, filmmakers feel more freedom in their work, and their interpretations of the traditional plot are interesting. There are many cases in life when girls suffer the fate of the well-known Cinderella – why not bring this fairy tale closer to reality, modern reality? Many relatively recent films are therefore very reminiscent of the same Cinderella in their plot. For example, directed by Garry Marshall in 1990, Pretty Woman.
Here, Cinderella becomes the moth she played Julia Robertswho ironically met Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a billionaire and successful businessman. True love blossoms between them, and thanks to Edward, Roberts’ character Vivienne will never return to her old life.
“The Princess Diaries” (2001)
The movie “Princess Diaries” was created in 2001 by the same Garry Marshall – he was very happy to “pull out” unfortunate girls from the very bottom and give them a handsome prince. The main character of the film is an ordinary schoolgirl Mia, played by Anne Hathaway.
She was a “gray mouse” all her life, which no one noticed at school and generally did not want to know. But fate gave her a gift that she didn’t even know at birth – the girl was a real princess, heir to the throne in the land of Genovia, where her own grandmother was the queen. As soon as Mia found out, everything began to change – and the appearance of the handsome prince did not take long.
Movies based on Cinderella “The Cinderella Story“(2004) featuring Hilary Duff and a picture “Another Cinderella Story” (2008) starring Selena Gomez.
In 2012, another film was added to this list: Russian movie “Cinderella” with the participation of Christina Asmusova, Artem Tkachenko, Liza Boyarskaya, Nonna Grishaeva, Alexander Tsekal and others.
The filmmakers believe that every era has its own Cinderella, and they told the story in their own way.
