‘Peak of cynicism!’: Ryan Gosling’s reckless stunt on a bridge angered Australians

The Canadian-born American artist arrived to participate in another project in Australia. The filming of the blockbuster stunt with Ryan took place on the Harbor Bridge in the capital. The script had Gosling holding on to a shovel as he rode a metal plate in the wake of a garbage truck. The epic scene takes several minutes to shoot, and the organizers blocked traffic for it. The bridge was closed for most of the day, causing traffic congestion in central Sydney.

The incredible footage was captured from a passing train while the train was moving normally. In a full-scale production, the bridge was filled with film equipment as well as several cars and trucks. Ryan chose a red leather jacket, a white shirt and ripped jeans with holes in the knees. At a certain moment, sparks started flying from under the metal stand. The actor stood up and performed a somersault from the front to get a better grip on the shovel. The Hollywood macho did without a stunt double.

Of course, the location for filming was well chosen. Opened in 1932, the Harbor Bridge is the largest bridge in Australia’s capital city and one of the largest steel arch bridges in the world. However, many locals were angry that the reason for the lockdown was not renovation work or an emergency, but the filming of a Hollywood movie. The bridge was closed to vehicles in both directions from 3:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with bike and pedestrian paths closed around the same time.

Residents took to social media to criticize Ryan Gosling and his team for causing major traffic delays across the city. “That’s the height of cynicism! Why should people suffer because of him?!”, “It’s great to see the Sydney Harbor Bridge closed – eight lanes, plus bike and pedestrian paths… All so they can make a bloody movie”, “I just want to know how much they paid to the government for such a nuisance”, “With the help of technology, it could have been filmed in another convenient location and then edited to look like it was filmed on the Harbor Bridge”, “Another average actor who keeps getting in everyone’s way,” Daily quoted Mail outraged Australians.

Filming began in September and Ryan arrived in Australia with partner Eva Mendes and their children. The film is based on the 1980s TV series of the same name and was directed by David Leitch. In addition to the two-time Oscar nominee, Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson will appear in the film.
