“I’ve lost faith in American justice”: Amber Heard pays $1 million to Johnny Depp

The ex-spouses have settled their defamation lawsuits against each other, ending the bitterest Hollywood divorce of modern times. The couple’s lawyers worked out a settlement where Heard’s insurance company would pay Depp $1 million. At the same time, the actress is not limited in what she can talk about in connection with this case, she has not admitted her guilt.

The couple have been involved in a bitter legal battle on both sides of the Atlantic for the past six years. It started with Heard’s announcement that she had been a victim of domestic violence during their 15-month marriage. A court in London ruled in her favor, but a second case in Fairfax, Virginia this year ended in Depp’s favor.

The movie star was ordered to pay $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million (later reduced to $365,000) in punitive damages after a six-week trial. Depp was ordered to pay Amber $2 million. Heard then countersued for defamation.

The couple’s lawyers spent a long time in discussions to avoid a painful third trial. Especially since Amber filed an appeal. A deal was eventually struck and both sides agreed to release a statement.

“Amber is now looking forward to getting on with her life as she planned six years ago. He wants to put this unfortunate episode behind him and get back to what he loves: career, family and affairs,” a source close to the Alpha Dog star told DailyMail.

In her high-profile statement, Hurd said her life had been destroyed by the court cases. She noted that she had lost all faith in the fairness of the American legal system when comparing it to the British. According to Amber, her ex-husband won in a Virginia courtroom because of the vote “for popularity and power over the mind.”

Having already sold her home in Los Angeles to fund her lawsuit, she didn’t want to risk another loss. Now her insurance company will take over the payment of the amount to Depp. “I made this decision after losing faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and fodder for social media,” Hurd added.
