From the outside, the life of the stars often seems cloudless and beautiful. But few people know what is really hidden behind the big smile. The popular French singer Dalida hid the pain of loneliness there.
From the outside, the life of the stars often seems cloudless and beautiful. But few people know what is really hidden behind the big smile. The popular French singer Dalida hid the pain of loneliness there.
Yolanda Christina Gigliotti was born on January 17, 1933 in Cairo. The father of the future star was Italian and played a violin virtuoso, and his mother was a French woman who made a living as a tailor.
Dalida’s life was difficult and full of trials. The first overtook her already at 10 months: then the child caught an infection that caused vision problems. The girl suffered from squint, and the situation was not corrected even by three complex operations, due to which Dalida could not be in the dark until the end of her life and even slept with light.
Needless to say, the girl was bullied at school? So beauty contests appeared in her life: with their help she tried to overcome complexes. And it worked: by winning titles like Miss Egypt, Dalida attracted the attention of representatives of the modeling agency. Further – the girl got several episodic roles in the film.
Then Yolanda Gigliotti said goodbye to her real name and became Dalida. In 1954, she went to Paris hoping to become a great actress. But something changed in the capital of France, and the girl became interested in music, and after a few performances, she was invited to a radio station and started filming.
Thanks to the director of the popular Europa-1 radio, Lucien Moriss, the song “Bambino” was recorded, which immediately became a hit. Dalida’s name thundered all over the world. Yes, like this – with the first composition.
In 1961, Dalida married Lucien, but their marriage quickly ended: the singer became interested in the artist, and her husband could not forgive her betrayal. A divorce followed.
In 1967, Dalida attempted suicide for the first time. The reason was the suicide of her colleague and comrade Luigi Tenko. She was the one who found the artist’s body, and it hurt her deeply. 90 hours in a coma, an extremely long recovery process, loss of voice, hearing and memory, and yet she made it. By the way, not without the support of her ex-husband. After recovering, Dalida returned to concert activity and her career skyrocketed. That’s when the famous song Paroles, Paroles with Alain Delon appeared.
In 1972, Dalida married for the second time, the Parisian artist Richard Chanfret became her chosen one. Unfortunately, a marriage of 9 years cannot be called happy. After the divorce, a new blow awaited the singer: her first ex-husband committed suicide and the reasons for the suicide are still unknown.
Depression enveloped Dalida as her successful career continued. In 1982, the singer’s old injuries made themselves known. In particular, standing on stage was excruciatingly painful for her: her eyes hurt because of the spotlights.
In 1983, a new blow – the second ex-husband of the artist Richard Chanfre committed suicide. After the divorce with the star, the man was drowning in debt and finally could not withstand the pressure of creditors.
This finally broke the singer. In 1986, she recorded her last album, The Face of Love, after which she fell into a deep depression. Nothing helped the artist.
After achieving unprecedented success and the love of millions of fans, Dalida was deeply unhappy in her life. The feeling of utter loneliness—no husband, no children, no friends—crushed her. And on May 3, 1987, Dalida decided that she would rather die. She was only 54 years old.
On parting, Yolanda Gigliotti left a short message: “Life has become unbearable for me. Sorry”.
