From love to hate: what was really the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana

Relationships in the British royal palace have always excited great curiosity. Viewers are primarily concerned about how Queen Elizabeth and her daughter-in-law Princess Diana got along.

As you know, Lady Dee appeared in the palace with the light hand of Elizabeth II herself, so unlike, for example, the TV series The Crown, it is safe to say that the princess (by the way, from an aristocratic family) was her own from the very beginning.

Royal biographers note that the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law they were polite but formal: “Diana was afraid of her mother-in-law at first. She observed formal bows, bowing deeply each time they met, but otherwise kept her distance.”

Elizabeth II. she gave Diana enormous confidence and was pleased with how her daughter-in-law presented the crown publicly. Almost from the moment she appeared in Prince Charles’s life, the princess was entrusted with many important missions – especially patronage charitable and medical organizations, participation in important state ceremonies and more. By the way, Camilla Parker-Bowles waited 8 years for such an honor.

Unfortunately, over the years (and increasing problems in Diana and Charles’s marriage), the relationship between the Queen and daughter-in-law began to strain, and even this formal respect evaporated. Lady Di added fuel to the fire: she appeared at the palace without warning, demanded an audience with the queen, could cry for hours.

Strangely, none other than Prince Philip supported her during these moments. According to biographers, he became the queen’s husband “perhaps a very unexpected ally in the palace.

The distance with the queen reached such proportions that Diana no longer cared about the reputation of the palace and openly rebelled. Elizabeth II. she also did not stand on ceremony and took retaliatory actions that ended their relationship.

The death of Princess Diana, on the other hand, slightly softened the defensive position of the queen, and it was her respectful attitude towards the deceased daughter-in-law that helped to maintain the reputation of the palace, when almost everyone blamed the royal family for the death of the queen of hearts.
