The film Striped flight directed by Vladimir Fetin was released in 1961. Many viewers remember the spectacular episode on the beach with the participation of Vasily Lanovoy. His character mistook tigers swimming in the open sea for a group of girls in striped swimsuits.

Edgard revealed the details of filming this scene. The 46-year-old circus artist assured that it was not a montage and the trick was performed by real tigers. The older brother of Askold Zapashný said that the film crew had to block the entire bay because of this.

“I am in love with this movie because it is perfect in every way. The main advantage is that it was filmed without a single computer effect. I consider it one of the greatest and most complex works of Soviet cinema. Because it was necessary to block the entire bay to release the animals into the sea to return in the right direction. Then guide them properly, take them to the beach so they don’t drag. There, 4-meter fences must be built so that the animals do not climb over, “Zapashny explained.

The general director of the Great Moscow State Circus admitted that tigers can swim, but it is not so easy to drive them into the water. Edgard revealed the trick the film crew used.

“Tigers don’t really like swimming very much. They swim under certain circumstances. It’s usually hot, it must be very hot. At the time of filming, the sun and Konstantinovsky were not always standing (husband of Margarita Nazarová, tiger trainer. – Ed.) he took such a step: he built a bath house on the shore and put tigers in it, set a certain temperature and opened the door. The coach also admitted that Vasiliy Lanovoy was in the squad by chance. “In the episode where they swim beautifully in striped swimsuits, Lanovoy said that he was sunbathing on the beach and did not plan to act in films. And when the director found out she was here, he asked, “Remove, please. For five minutes.” Those five minutes did their job,” added Edgard in an interview on Alexander Dobrovinski’s YouTube channel. Vasily Lanovoy claimed that this role was his favorite.
