Stars of Sacrifice, hunger and isolation: what the stars who were members of the sect experienced

Miley Cyrus

Fans of the pop singer sound the alarm: in their opinion, the star has come under the influence of sectarians from the “modern school of the sacraments”. Miley abruptly canceled her world tour and is less likely to make public appearances. “Enlightenment”, according to former members of the sect, costs a lot of money there – you have to pay at least 20 thousand dollars. Members of the community allegedly practice sacrifice and some are forced to have sex in séances.

The celebrity siblings grew up in Skymont Subud, Virginia. It was an international cult that originated in Indonesia in the 1920s. The parents of the future stars were the ones who founded a commune in the USA with friends in the hope of building a utopian society, but drug abuse and violence turned the children’s lives into hell.

The group itself didn’t identify itself as a religious sect or cult, but as a “spiritual movement,” but that didn’t make life any easier.

As the actress recalled, her family did not have access to electricity, bathrooms and running water.

Joaquin Phoenix

The Joker star also had a sectarian childhood. He and his siblings River, Rain, Liberty and Summer grew up in the Children of God community.

Joaquin Phoenix’s parents joined a controversial religious group in the early 1970s and toured South America with their children. When Joaquin was four years old, they left the cult and changed their last name from Bottom to Phoenix to symbolize the family’s new beginning.

Later, allegations were made against the sect that young members were kidnapped and sexually abused.

Glenn Close

At the age of seven, the Hollywood legend moved with the rest of his family to Switzerland to join the spiritual movement Moral Rearmament. She didn’t leave the sect founded in the 1930s by Reverend Frank Buchman until she was 22 and studying acting at the College of William and Mary.

The actress admitted that the years in the sect had a strong influence on her.

“For years I didn’t trust my instincts because all my faith was dictated to me. When you’re told how to feel and what to say between the ages of 7 and 22, it has a profound effect on you,” Close told The Hollywood Reporter.

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder spent her childhood in a commune in Northern California, where her family lived with six other families. By the way, the actress herself, although she admits that it was a cult, remembers that time fondly.

“The place we lived was a 380-acre redwood forest. It was very beautiful there,” said Parade.

Rose McGowan

Rose McGowan revealed in her memoirs that she and her family were involved with the Children of God until she was 9 years old. The actress wrote that she is completely cut off from the rest of the world and the role of women in the cult was mainly to serve men sexually – they were allowed to have multiple wives.

Her family fled when it was revealed that sexual relations between adults and children were encouraged in the sect.

“My father and his second wife ran away in the middle of the night. I remember racing through the cornfield through thunder and lightning, holding my father’s hand and running as fast as I could to keep up with him. The sect sent people to find us. I remember a man who tried to break into our house with a hammer.’

Michelle Pfeiffer

When the actress first came to Los Angeles in her 20s, she became interested in Breatharianism. Then young Michelle had no idea it was a cult.

“They controlled me. I didn’t live with them, but I visited them and they always told me I needed to go more often. I had to pay for the whole time I was there, so it was very draining financially.’

Breatharianism is a cult that emphasizes the ability to live without food and water and use sunlight as the only source of sustenance.

Pfeiffer only realized she was involved in a cult when she met her first husband, Peter Horton, who was making a film about cults, and he told her the details. Then Pfeiffer realized where he was. Needless to say, she quickly cut ties with her mentors.

Tom Cruise

The actor is perhaps the most famous follower of the cult in Hollywood. While others on our list have long since severed all ties to cults, Cruz remains a loyal and devoted Scientologist to this day.

He became a member of a religious community in the early 1990s and claimed it helped him cope with dyslexia. The actor has declared his love for Scientology countless times. According to rumors, it was Cruise’s obsession that caused his divorces from Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

The cult was founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1953 and promotes a belief in immortality through reincarnation.
