“The champion is back!”: Roman Kostomarov showed how he trains after being discharged from the hospital 07/11/2023, 08:45

The 2006 Olympic champion is recovering from a serious illness. Roman remained under medical supervision for 175 days. All this time, Kommunarka doctors fought for Kostomarov’s life. Pneumonia caused complications that led to sepsis, so surgeons performed several operations to amputate the legs and arms.

After being released from the hospital, Roman began to actively play sports. He showed a fragment of one of the training sessions. The skater appeared at the gym wearing a white T-shirt, shorts and a cap. The two-time world champion was doing arm exercises. “Come on, champion! We are working!” – said Kostomarov his mentor. Vladimir Perepelkin supported the mentee in his achievements. “Champ is back.” Only forward!” – said the athlete.

Meanwhile, Roman was spotted walking with his wife Oksana Domnina. It is the first time Kostomarov has been seen outside of a medical facility. The 46-year-old figure skater moves independently, and Oksana helps him: opens and closes doors, carries fruit bags, drives a car, according to the Super Telegram channel.

Kostomarov ended up in the intensive care unit in Kommunarka on January 10, his condition was extremely serious. Tests for the coronavirus came back negative. Roman was put on a ventilator and then put into a medically induced coma. Despite the positive dynamics, prolonged connection to the ECMO device led to circulatory disorders and the death of limb tissues.

In February, there were reports that Roman was waking up from a drug-induced stupor, and in March that the skater had regained consciousness. The athlete published the first video after treatment on June 26. Kostomarov exercised on an exercise bike with prostheses on both legs. After being released from Kommunarka, Roman sincerely thanked the doctors who saved him and turned to Oksana, who did not leave him during the difficult period.

The endurance of the champion shocked both other athletes and stars of Russian show business. Tatyana Tarasova published a photo of Kostomarov with his wife and child. The coach was glad that Roman was improving. Words of support were left to Kostomarov by Anna Semenovich, Alla Mikheeva, Natalia Podolskaya and others.
