Turkish actor and singer, twice participating in Eurovision, Ozkan Ugur, died of a recurrence of cancer 10.07.2023, 08:40

A member of the well-known MFÖ band ended up in the hospital due to worsening illness. Ozkan managed to defeat lymph cancer three times, but this time he could not be saved. The artist spent more than a month in a medical facility.

“Our Ozkan, who was first diagnosed with lymphoma 13 years ago and was successfully treated, unfortunately spent some time in the hospital as the disease recurred. He was observed in the intensive care unit for about 1.5 months. As a result of the treatment, Ozkan’s lymphoma started to go into remission and hopefully we have been waiting for good news,” Ugur’s family members said.

Despite all the efforts of specialists, Ozkan’s body no longer received appropriate treatment. The musician’s relatives told his fans that Ugur is no more. “Unfortunately, due to various lung problems, his body did not respond adequately to the treatment. It is with great sadness that we announce that today the fight for life is over,” said the musician’s wife Aysun Aslan Ugur and his son Alishan. Ugur has been married to a choreographer since 1989.

The first people from Turkey expressed their condolences. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca called Ozkan a dear friend and said Uğur’s work would not be forgotten. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pointed to the merits of the star.

“Today we received the news of his death and we pray for the mercy of Allah on Ozkan Ugur, our country’s favorite voice and film artist, recipient of the Presidential Award in the field of music “Culture and Art”; sincere condolences to his family, his loved ones and our entire artistic community,” Haber quotes Erdogan as saying.

Ozkan Ugur was born on October 17, 1953 in Istanbul. He grew up in a large family where he was the fifth child. Ozkan started playing the mandolin in elementary school and started his own amateur band in high school. In 1970, Ugur became a professional musician and appeared in Sherif Yuzbasioglu’s orchestra as a bass player.

Ten years later, Ozkan became one of the founding members of the band MFÖ, whose first album was released in 1984. Together with the team, Ugur represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest twice. In 1985, with the song Didai didai dai, they took the 14th place, and in 1988, with the song Sufi – 15. Ozkan starred in serials and films. He appeared in the projects My Friend Satan, Commissioner Shakespeare, 15 Minutes on Slow Fire, Wild West or the Twilight series.
