“Injection could not lead to limb amputations”: doctor says Roman Kostomarov suffered due to medical error 07/06/2023, 08:35

On the eve, Alexander Zhulin expressed the opinion that the cause of pneumonia in his former ward was an injection with an anti-inflammatory drug. The coach noted that as a result, Kostomarov’s temperature dropped, he stopped feeling pain. As a result, the skater worked on the ice for ten days with an illness. Doctor of Medical Sciences Andrey Shestakov disagreed with these words.

“Of course, no anti-inflammatory injection could lead to such serious complications, especially limb amputations,” said the doctor. – It is obvious that the diagnosis was wrong from the very beginning. The covid plus pneumonia took a serious toll on the joints. Roman initially complained of joint pain, which is why he received this injection. But the injection could have no effect because the problem was much deeper. The main symptoms were simply not noted, they were considered a simple cold.

The doctor explained that the joints for skaters are the tools of the job. Shestakov called them the most sensitive place for athletes. According to him, the situation turned out to be disastrous due to the fact that Kostomarov was not primarily provided with help with his joints.

“The reason for this real destruction of the body was multiple infections in the process of acquiring covid and pneumonia. Also, the main symptoms remained for a long time without proper attention, which led to amputations and complications. Therefore, you need to be very attentive to your body and not ignore it, “said Andrey for Sport24 portal.

The Olympic champion in a pair with Taťána Navka underwent leg and hand amputations in February. Now the athlete is actively recovering – training on temporary prostheses.

“Kostomarov’s recovery time may take about six months or a year, maybe longer.” Walking on prosthetic legs is quite easy, you just need to learn how to balance. Learning to climb stairs is a bit more difficult, but he has learned it now. At the same time, it will be quite difficult to control the hand, which now works with feedback. For this, it is necessary to teach the brain to work with residual impulses. This process takes several months or longer, “explained rehabilitation doctor Valery Vasiliev Vechernaya Moscow.
