Dive into the price list: the renewed Mazda 2

The Mazda 2 has been around for a while. Retirement is not yet in sight, because Mazda has renewed the existing model again. With a look at the price list we can see what the new version has to offer.

The current generation of Mazda 2 was launched in 2014. By today’s standards, the model is showing its age. However, the compact model does not have to think about retirement yet, because Mazda has refreshed the 2 Series for the new model year. And to be honest, the model didn’t look old-fashioned anyway. So a timeless design.

Incidentally, we are talking about the “real” Mazda 2. Mazda also supplies the 2 Hybrid. This is a different model, namely a Toyota Yaris Hybrid with different logos. We explored what this model has to offer earlier in this section, now let’s just look at the Mazda 2 from Mazda itself.

What’s new in the Mazda 2?

The new features of the Mazda 2 are not earth-shattering, but they are certainly immediately visible in the entry-level version. It gets a semi-closed grille and body-colored elements on the hubcaps. In addition, the light units have been slightly modified, but most importantly, the equipment is up to date.

The only engine variant is now the SkyActiv-G with an output of 66 kW (90 hp) and 151 Nm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and the engine also features mild hybrid technology. A six-speed automatic is optional and then the mild hybrid technology is deleted. Consumption is quite modest at 4.7 l/100 km (manual transmission) and 5.4 l/100 km (automatic transmission). With an empty weight of approx. 1,000 kg, the car is not heavy by today’s standards and even 900 kg are allowed on the trailer hitch.

Price renewed Mazda 2

The price tag has also been updated. There is now an amount of at least 21,290 euros. Anyone who wants the machine is already at 24,290 euros. The most expensive version is the Homura Aka with automatic transmission, which costs 29,290 euros. The other trim levels are there with equal steps in between. Those are definitely prices. This is not due to Mazda, but to our government, which already taxes such compact cars extremely high. Without taxes, the Mazda 2 would have a starting price of 14,839 euros…

The only consolation: The Mazda 2 is still cheaper than direct competitors. The Skoda Fabia is available from 22,790 euros, the Peugeot 208 from 24,050 euros and the Ford Fiesta from 26,450 euros, to name just a few.

Naked cars are no longer supplied, so the Mazda 2 also comes with most of the amenities as standard. Cruise control and even heated exterior mirrors are standard equipment, as is a leather steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen for infotainment via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a safety system that can prevent a collision by intervening on the brakes. You also get 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps and cloth upholstery.

This week we’re keeping it as cheap as possible with our configuration. We skip the more luxuriously decorated versions Homura, Exclusive-Line and Homura Aka. Also, the basic version with a closed grille and partially colored hubcaps looks extra Japanese, which is also nice. We also opt for the manual gearbox. This also saves the necessary euros, but it’s also nice to be able to change gear yourself in a new car. More and more cars are only available with automatic transmissions.

The Mazda 2 is white as standard, a different color costs 700 euros extra. Then you have the choice between black and also many shades of gray, but also two shades of blue. A specific shade of dark gray costs an additional €900 and the distinctive Mazda red costs an additional €1,050. We’re on the road for more color. In this case we go for the fresh Air Stream Blue, which somehow gives the car an extra Japanese touch. There’s no other wheel choice without switching trim levels, so let’s move on to the interior.

Only black fabric upholstery is available for the version we chose, but there is some choice with the other color accents. For example, mint-colored interior accents are standard. Alternatively, these accents are white or the interior is completely black. We stick with the standard mint, goes well with the exterior.

Packages and Options

There are two option packs. The Convenience & Connectivity Pack (1,500 euros) consists of automatic air conditioning, front seat heating, rain and light sensors, rear parking sensors, blind spot warning and Advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection. Always at hand, just like the integrated navigation system (500 euros).

In addition to the carbon interior air filter (74 euros, we order), the separate options mainly concern extra decoration and accessories. We don’t need any striping on the body (325 to 402 euros) or on the tailpipe trim (114 euros). Remarkably, the Exclusive Line 16-inch alloy wheels can now suddenly be checked out for 1,585 euros (standard) or 1,886 euros (black). we are not. We find aluminum pedals and footrests fun (together 182 euros). The door sills (209 euros) also look good, although we didn’t use the illuminated version (319 euros). The standard halogen interior lighting can be replaced with LEDs for 80 euros. We also opt for the luxury floor mats (91 euros).

Ultimately, our assembled Mazda 2 costs 24,565 euros. A lot of money, but you can’t charge Mazda for that.
