Why the BYD Dolphin can be a success in the Netherlands

Why the BYD Dolphin can be a success in the Netherlands

Not an SUV for a change, but a hatchback in the C segment. After a studio shoot and a drive-in, we introduce you to the BYD Dolphin.

With this first cursory introduction to this BYD Dolphin, we can tell you more than you might expect based on the limited test drives. Thanks to the Atto 3 with the same powertrain that we previously tested extensively in the Netherlands. That BYD managed to win the autovisie double test, where we do all the measurements ourselves. He beat the bestseller in the segment, the good Kia Niro EV.

The BYD Dolphin

Before we share our field experiences, let’s take a quick walk through the equipment and specs. Because what are we talking about at the BYD Dolphin? It is not an SUV like the Atto 3, but a C-segment hatchback with a length of almost 4.30 meters and a wheelbase of 2.70 meters.

Just like the BYD Atto 3, it is equipped with a 204 hp electric motor, which corresponds exactly to the performance of, for example, Volkswagen’s ID.3. The battery capacity is 60 kWh and the WLTP range is specified as 427 km. Only seven kilometers more than its less streamlined SUV brother Atto3. The maximum charging speed would also be a maximum of 88 kW, just like the Atto 3.

potential for success

But who knows, maybe it does better in our real-world test like its family member, even managing to slightly exceed its maximum loading speed. The test consumption was also better than expected despite the lower temperatures. So that bodes well for this BYD Dolphin, you would say. However, every car has to undergo its own test, you owe it to us. The few laps we were able to do here were satisfactory, but not enough to qualify him against the competition.

The interior is spacious, originally designed and well finished. The equipment is generous, a heat pump comes as standard and is also competitive in terms of safety. Now to the price, because the price-performance ratio was the decisive point with which the Atto3 won the double test and this Dolphin also has to qualify.

Price BYD dolphin

The preliminary price indication for Europe is 30 to 38,000 euros, we are thinking about 35 grand for the Netherlands. And like the Atto 3, we hope for good practice results that are worth more than paper records. Because it doesn’t set any standards in terms of design, absolute charging capacity or range.
