Volkswagen had diesel? That’s how much compensation you should get
Earlier this week it became clear that Volkswagen – and other manufacturers – must compensate customers who bought a diesel with cheat software. At least that is the judgment of the European Court of Justice. Now the court in Haarlem also agrees with the verdict.
In fact, the Dutch court immediately attaches an amount to the compensation. Compensation was awarded to an owner of a Golf TDI. The lawsuit is one of four court cases that the Volkswagen Group Diesel Efficiency Foundation (VGDES) and the consumer association have instituted against Volkswagen.
This is how much compensation you should get according to the Dutch court
According to Volkswagen, consumers who bought a diesel with fraudulent software did not suffer any financial damage and are therefore not entitled to compensation. However, the Car Claim Foundation already proved in 2021 that a lawsuit leads to a different outcome. As the judge in Haarlem has now decided, the customer will receive compensation of 3,000 euros. Volkswagen appealed the verdict in 2021. Now the German carmaker is also considering an appeal.
Although compensation for the fraudulent software diesels from Volkswagen, among others, appears to be a lengthy legal process – and it already is, many are hoping they will be compensated. In America, Volkswagen has long compensated. VW states that the software of the Dutch cars is different, the laws and regulations are different in America.
Also compensation for buyers of used Volkswagen diesel
It remains to be seen whether Volkswagen will finally compensate buyers of a diesel in the Netherlands with cheating software. In addition, the discussion is raging as to whether only buyers of a new car should receive compensation. For example, some authorities are demanding 1,500 euros in compensation for buyers of used cars.
