Volkswagen says goodbye to legendary model
Volkswagen says goodbye to a very famous car from the brand: the Passat sedan. This is confirmed by Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer Automotive News Europe. The new generation is only available as a station.
The future of the Passat has been in doubt for some time. For the time being, only the sedan will disappear from the price lists. Although America bid farewell to the model last year, it’s a notable choice. After all, the VW 2022 was the best-selling car in its segment.
No more Volkswagen Passat sedans
The Volkswagen Passat was first introduced in 1973. At that time it was already available as a sedan. Although the Variant generally sold significantly better than the sedan, Volkswagen stayed true to the body style.
The ninth generation Volkswagen Passat therefore does not come as a sedan. According to Schäfer, the model will be delivered in September. This would mean that the reveal will happen sometime in the next few months. The new model will not be built in Emden, Germany, but in Batrislava, Slovakia.
The Skoda Superb, which is technically almost identical to the Volkswagen, will also be built in Bratislava in the future. The Superb is not only available as a station wagon. The liftback also remains in production, according to the CEO. After the Passat, the Superb was the best-selling car in its class (EU) last year.
An Arteon or another brand?
Although the decision may be a thorn in the side of sedan enthusiasts, the Volkswagen Arteon is still available as a hatchback. For a real sedan in the segment, you can turn to Mazda for the 6 Series, for example. Autovisie compared the model to the Opel Insignia a few years ago.
