You can expect these compact electric cars soon
Volkswagen this week previewed the ID.2, a compact and reasonably affordable electric hatchback. In this article, we show you which compact electric cars you can expect to see in the near future.
Let’s start with the current range of compact electric cars. Stellantis offers a range of these models. Think of the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208, both of which fall into the B segment and share a lot of technology. Fiat also delivers the 500e. Renault still has the well-known Zoe on the price list and Mini and Honda are knocking on the door for the Cooper SE and e. There are real little ones at Dacia (Spring) and Smart (ForTwo and ForFour).
2023: Fiat ‘Punto’
Fiat currently only builds the 500 and Panda, but that’s about to change. The Italians will significantly expand their model range in the coming years and will be able to take advantage of the technology present within Stellantis. A compact B-segmenter from Fiat, which may bear the Punto name, will be released shortly.
Technically, the car is based on the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208 electric cars already mentioned. So think of a 54 kWh battery, an output of 156 hp and a range of around 400 kilometers. We expect Fiat to show the new Punto this year.
2024: Renault 5
A very important newcomer will come onto the market next year. It is the Renault 5, which is a modern interpretation of the original 5 and in particular the Supercinq. The French announced it in early 2021 but have been keeping their teeth together since then.
It’s known that it will be released in 2024, but we don’t know anything about the battery pack, range and performance. However, Renault once promised that the electric car would cost less than 30.00 euros, although we do not know what is left of this after years of price increases in the car sector. By the way, the Renault 4 also returns, but this will be a slightly higher crossover, occupying a position above this 5.
2024: Nissan Micra
Where Fiat relies on Stellantis technology, Nissan does so as part of the alliance with Renault. When the French have pulled the curtain on the 5 Series, Nissan will probably show the Micra itself. It is technically based on this model, but will differ in design from the beautiful Fransoos.
Renault will build the new Micra for Nissan, in addition to its own 5 Series. Just like this model, Nissan is also aiming for a starting price of less than 30,000 euros.
2025: Lancia Upsilon
You can tell it’s getting a bit monotonous. Because if you know that Lancia is part of Stellantis, you also know that the new Ypsilon probably relies on technology from … Right, the cars that have already passed by a few times in this list. Lancia will introduce a new Ypsilon in 2025 and will most likely share its technology with the electric cars from Opel, Peugeot and Fiat.
That’s not very crazy. Stellantis has the advantage of being able to develop one platform and use it for multiple models. This increase makes it easier and cheaper to build an electric car, and a brand like Lancia benefits from it.
2025: Volkswagen ID.2
In the same year, Volkswagen also presented a compact model under the current ID.3. It’s called ID.2 and Volkswagen already showed what to expect this week. The ID 2all is a compact B-segment electric car that is the size of a Polo but has the interior of a Golf.
Volkswagen is now promising that the ID.2 has a starting price of around 25,000 and can travel 450 kilometers on one charge. The very best news? They’re bringing back physical knobs for the radio and climate controls! For this reason alone, this electric car already scores with us a lot…
