Research: These generations prefer to tinker with the car themselves

In England, the auction house Ebay did a nice study. Among other things, she examined which generation prefers to tinker with cars themselves.

Before we tell you which generation prefers to tinker with the car and which prefers not, a few disclaimers. This is an English language survey conducted among more than 1500 respondents. They all own and drive a car and fall into all sorts of age groups. And so chances are good that you think very differently about car care than your English contemporaries.

save costs

Anyway, which group prefers to tinker with the car themselves? According to Ebay, which commissioned Censuswide’s survey, more than 25 percent of millennials (born between 1980 and 1999) work on their car themselves. Because they like it, but above all to save costs and avoid a visit to the workshop.

Which group can easily go to the workshop to have minor repairs carried out? It’s the baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964): Only 18 percent of respondents are not afraid of black fingers. The other 82 percent prefer to drive to the workshop.

Young people want too

The surprise of the research is Generation Z. These are people born between 1997 and 2012. More than 23 percent of those surveyed in this age group stated that they would tinker with the car themselves if possible. The attentive reader knows that one group has not yet been addressed: Generation X (born between 1960 and 1980). But the research doesn’t look at this group’s responses.

Ebay also points out that there are a number of items that are easiest for car owners to repair or replace themselves. More than half of those surveyed said they wanted to change their car’s wipers themselves. However, this also means that almost half of the respondents would not want to do this simple job themselves… In addition, the English motorist is willing to repair the wing mirrors.

rising costs

According to Ebay, the reason for the relatively high proportion of self-repairs is the rising costs of recent times.
