This electric Volkswagen has a range of up to 450 km for less than 25,000 euros

Volkswagen presented the ID.2all concept car at a major press event in Hamburg. The electric B-Segmenter with a range of up to 450 kilometers is the first Volkswagen on the shorter MEB Entry platform. The interesting thing is that the price will remain under 25,000 euros.

The range in combination with the price makes the Volkswagen ID.2all a unique car. With limited electric range in this price range, there is no other car of this size and range. If you buy an electric car for 25,000 euros, you will quickly end up with an electric Twingo, Smart or Dacia Springer, which give this Volkswagen the disadvantage in terms of range.

Technical data of the Volkswagen ID.2all

The Volkswagen ID.2all is based on a shorter version of the now well-known MEB platform. The EV is powered by a 226 hp electric motor, which, unlike the ID.3, is located under the hood. The front wheels are therefore driven.

The Volkswagen ID 2.all should be able to complete a 1 to 100 sprint in less than seven seconds. If you’ve printed your battery empty, you can charge it from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes on a fast charger. The electric car manages this with a maximum of 125 kW.

production model

Apart from a set of narrow mirrors and futuristic light units, the ID.2all already looks very ready for production. Spacious like a Golf, with the price and size of a Polo, says Volkswagen. The latter is correct; the ID.2all is 4.05 meters long, 1.81 meters wide and 1.53 meters high.

Little is known about the interior design. Imelda Labbé, responsible for marketing and sales at Volkswagen, tells us that physical buttons are making a comeback. No more annoying, unlit sliders, as the facelifted ID.3 still knows.

Physical buttons return in the ID.3

Labbé also states that the refreshed ID.3 still has these sliders, as the facelifted version was already finished when the decision was made to reintroduce physical buttons. Luckily there will be a new update for the ID.3 in 2024, which will see the buttons return.

The ID.3 has not been a resounding success so far. Labbé is satisfied with the current sales figures and points out that the order books are quite full. At the same time, she admits to feeling the pressure. “The Chinese have done their homework.”

More and more top managers are feeling this. “Competition is getting tougher, you can feel that everywhere,” says Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer in an interview with Autovisie. The affordability of some emerging Chinese brands now appears to be forcing Volkswagen to develop an affordable EV as well. “To get more people, especially young people, to buy an electric car, 25,000 euros is a crucial upper limit.”

“Producing an uncompromising car at a reasonable price is a challenge,” admits Schäfer. He believes Volkswagen is able to do this because of the knowledge and scalability of the big brand.

Electric Volkswagen for less than 20,000 euros

Volkswagen even goes one step further and announces that in addition to the ID.2all, it will also be launching an electric car for less than 20,000 euros. Schäfer comes back to this a little bit in an interview with Autovisie: “We can guarantee an electric car for 25,000 euros, but none for less than 20,000 euros.” But, he says, that’s the goal. Whether it will be on the same MEB entry platform is not yet clear.

More will undoubtedly be announced about this model, which could be called the ID.1. For the time being you have to be content with the ID.2all. The car must fulfill the ID.3’s mission: to bring the general public into the electric vehicle. With this in mind, the ID.3 was placed alongside the Beetle and Golf when it was launched in 2017. Cars that brought the big crowds into the car in their time.

Volkswagen ID Polo

Hence the name ID.2all; An electric car for everyone. This name could be marketing related catchy but does not lag behind the production model. Volkswagen has indicated that it is not yet sure about the name of the upcoming electric vehicle. In addition, the brand does not want to throw the iconic names in the trash, which means that it is quite possible that the production model will be called ID.Polo.
