This modern fast charging station looks like an ordinary gas station

The number of fast charging stations is growing rapidly, but the experience at such a station is not really the same as that of a “normal” petrol pump. That’s going to change. In 2024, Fastned will start building a complete “filling station” for electric cars.

Finding a fast charger in the Netherlands will no longer be a problem in 2022. But the experience with such a fast charger can be very different depending on the location. In many cases, as an EV driver, you are pushed into a corner in a gray parking lot next to the motorway, with no facilities nearby. This is going to change. Fastned will start building a very complete fast charging station next year.

Only for electric cars

The company has won a European tender for the construction of service areas with exclusively electric fast charging stations. It will build this first large fast charging station on the E17 near Ghent. It is building “rest stops of the future” on both sides of the Autobahn. There you can not only charge your electric car, but also buy toilets, sandwiches, coffee and other things.

According to Fastned, the station offers access to a thousand electric cars. Thanks to the fast charging power of 400 kW, it takes around 15 minutes to recharge a range of 300 kilometers. Of course, this depends on several factors, such as B. the charging capacity of the car you hang on the pole, but the chargers are certainly fast.

green energy

Fastned also reports that the chargers only provide energy from the sun and wind. This makes the electricity you charge on site completely green. There is also space for larger electric vehicles such as trailers and trucks. Of course, Fastned also places the well-known yellow awnings here, which you will already come across all over Europe.

The fast-charging company will therefore start building this station next year, but is aiming to open more sites of this type in the coming years. By 2030, around 1000 large stations should still be in operation.

More and more fast chargers at gas stations

Incidentally, Fastned does not build the first fast charging stations near a service area. More and more regular gas stations, which already have a comprehensive network with extensive facilities, are installing fast chargers to welcome electric drivers as well. What is unique about the Fastned location, however, is that only electric cars are welcome here.
