Is this the electric car everyone’s been waiting for?
Electric cars are far from everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s about to change. Volkswagen takes this very literally and is presenting the ID. 2all. That’s right, an electric model for everyone!
We’ve known for a long time that Volkswagen has such a model in the pipeline. Work has been going on for several years on a compact model that is to be placed under the ID.3. This car must have a starting price of around 25,000 euros and be on the market in 2025. Today we get a very concrete preview of this model.
Bigger than polo
Let’s start with the sizing. The ID 2all is 4.05 meters long, 1.81 meters wide and 1.53 meters high. This makes it easy to compare it with the Volkswagen Polo. However, this electric model is a few centimeters wider. It’s also slightly taller than a Polo (about 10 centimeters) thanks to the battery pack in the floor.
The ID 2all has a slightly wider wheelbase than a Polo, although it doesn’t make much of a difference. The electric model has a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, the well-known conventional “little brother” manages it with 2.56 meters. This makes the electric model a little more spacious. Volkswagen speaks of an interior that is just as spacious as that of a Golf. The luggage compartment of the ID. 2all much larger. Where the Polo holds 355 liters, the ID. 2all not less than 490 liters. Fold down the rear seats and 1330 liters fit into the electric city car.
Area ID. 2all
More important information is located in the drive train. The ID 2all is based on the MEB Entry platform and is the first electric Volkswagen with front-wheel drive. No wonder, because the Germans showed at the IAA in Munich two years ago that this car (then called ID. Life) had an engine on the front axle. The power source is good for 166 kW (226 hp) and ensures that the car sprints to 100 km/h in 7 seconds. The maximum speed is 160 km/h.
Volkswagen has not yet announced details of the battery pack. It says that the ID. 2all has a range of up to 450 kilometers. Charging from 10 to 80 percent on the fast charger takes about 20 minutes. Whether these numbers will all hold up when the 2025 model finally hits the market remains to be seen.
Yes: physical buttons!
We’ve already talked about the enlarged interior, but today Volkswagen also shows a production-ready dashboard. That’s pretty unique at this stage. The ID 2all will have a large digital instrument panel (27.7 cm) and an even larger touchscreen (32.7 cm). The operating concept is really big news. Despite that huge screen, Volkswagen is bringing back the beloved physical buttons! Thus the ID. 2all has a separate button for the volume and the air conditioning has its own separate control panel. Thank you for that, Volkswagen.
The final production version of the ID. 2all will therefore appear in 2025. We expect a starting price of 25,000 euros, as promised for years. Skoda and Cupra will introduce sister models based on the same MEB entry platform in the same year.
