Tesla hints at dirt cheap model over new EV platform
On March 1, Tesla holds its investor day. Always interesting what Elon Musk has to say now. Maybe an affordable new model?
While other brands like BMW, Audi and Mercedes all have a small hatchback in their range, Tesla doesn’t offer a car in the C segment. Still, a compact mid-range from the brand would be more than welcome. Now there are indications it is coming.
Tesla with thousands of euros discount
Tesla’s most successful model to date, the Model 3, can be bought in the Netherlands from 45,000 euros. Anyone who bought a Model 3 at the end of last year will now be surprised. Where everything is getting more expensive, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y became thousands of euros cheaper in early January.
The Model 3 initially cost 52,000 euros and the Model Y Long Range was even 12,000 euros cheaper. The reason for this price reduction is a purchase premium, for which the Tesla Model 3 is now an option.
Cheap new Tesla Q?
Just under 45,000 euros is a fairly normal price for a car like the Model 3. Although there is demand for it, we have yet to see a cheap hatchback like the Mercedes A-Class. Of course, that’s because the brand only makes electric cars, which are simply more expensive to develop.
Still, there’s hope for Tesla enthusiasts on a budget. During the investor day will Elon Musk name the latest EV platform generation 3 currently. The current S, 3, X and Y models (yes, that’s an acrostic) are all four still on the second-gen EV platform. Below is what a designer made of the hatchback by destroying the acrostic with a Q.
Last year, Elon Musk already hinted that this platform will be smaller than the current EV base. Also, it would cost about half that. A Tesla for just over 20,000 euros is therefore realistic. The company’s CEO sees a bright future for the new platform. “I think it will exceed the production numbers of all other models combined,” he predicts. These include the current Model 3 and Model Y, which are currently the cheapest and best-selling models.
Less than 25,000 euros
So it looks like a compact Tesla is in the works. Considering that Elon Musk expects to produce two Teslas on it generation 3platform will cost the same as making a Tesla Model 3, with the next model coming to market significantly cheaper. There is even speculation about a new price of less than 25,000 euros. That would be by far the cheapest Tesla ever.
