So many electric cars are actually sold in Europe

Electric cars, you hear a lot about them. Almost all manufacturers are working on it and Autovisie’s test workshop would be unimaginable without it. But how many electric vehicles are really being sold in Europe?

Earlier we showed how many electric vehicles are sold in the Netherlands. 26 percent of all cars sold in our country in 2022 will have a battery pack and an electric motor instead of a petrol engine.

So many electric cars are actually sold in Europe

In Europe, this proportion is significantly lower. According to figures from the European trade association ACEA, more than 12 percent of the cars sold in the European Union last year were fully electric. That’s a lot more than 2021, when just 3 percent of new cars sold were all-electric.

A total of around 9.3 million cars were sold in Europe in 2022. A large part of this is swallowed up by cars with a partially electric drive (hybrid). 22.6 percent of all new cars sold were hybrids. In 2021 it was still 19.6 percent.

Gasoline and diesel cars are gradually becoming less popular. In 2021, 40 percent of new cars will be equipped with a petrol engine. In 2022 it was 36.4 percent. The diesel engine also delivers a lot when it comes to sales. From 19.6 percent in 2021 to 16.4 percent in 2022.

Electric vehicles are not yet popular everywhere

Although diesel and petrol cars are also less popular in the Netherlands and sales of electric and hybrid cars are increasing, this is not the case everywhere. Notably, sales of gasoline cars grew over 4 percent in the fourth quarter. Significantly more petrol engines were sold, especially in Italy (plus 17.4 percent). France (plus 3.5 percent) also showed a plus.
