Why the Porsche 911 Sport Classic is 250,000 euros (!) more expensive in America
In the Netherlands, the Porsche 911 Sport Classic costs exactly 376,285 euros. The only way to increase this amount is to order options. In the USA, the official starting price is 272,300 US dollars, but in practice you pay significantly more. How is that possible?
A Reddit forum user spotted a Porsche 911 Sport Classic at a dealership in California. He fell back in amazement when he saw the price of the car: $538,910. That’s 97.9 percent more than the starting price of $272,300. So someone in the options list has gone completely nuts or something else is going on.
Porsche 911 Sport Classic twice as expensive
The latter is the case. In the Netherlands, dealers stick to the starting price set by the manufacturer or importer. In the United States this is not the case. They are allowed to add a so-called dealer surcharge to the UVP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price).
Coming back to the 911 Sport Classic in California. Including options, the copy costs $288,910, but the asking price at the dealer is $538,910. Why? Because the dealer knows that the demand for the 911 Sport Classic will be great. Only 1250 examples will be built and Porsche enthusiasts would love to own one.
Also dealer surcharges for the Ford F-150 Lightning
There are dealer surcharges not only for rare Porsches, but also for other models for which the demand is high and the supply small. When the electric F-150 Lightning was launched, Ford could barely produce enough units. Traders took advantage of this scarcity by shamelessly raising their asking prices. In the US this is allowed. Luckily not in Europe.
Ode to the Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS from the seventies
The 911 Sport Classic is a Porsche Exclusive product and is visually reminiscent of the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS from the 1970s and is powered on the rear wheels by a biturbo six-cylinder boxer engine with 550 hp and 728 Nm. It is shifted with a seven-speed manual transmission.
