Three years after its entry, Audi is aiming for the Formula 1 championship
Audi is aiming for victories three years after entering Formula 1, but is even hoping for faster successes. From 2026, the German manufacturer will be at the top of motorsport.
“We have signed for the period from 2026 to 2030. After three years we want to be able to fight for the victories,” says Adam Baker, who heads the department that develops the Formula 1 engine at the German automaker.
After three years, a championship is realistic
“We are realistic. The first year will be difficult and the second year can also be difficult, which is difficult to predict. But the new technical regulations that will apply from 2026 offer the opportunity to be more competitive as a newcomer,” said Baker from Audi, who was previously responsible for the development of Formula 1 engines at BMW.
Audi is supplying the engines to the Swiss Formula 1 team Sauber, which will operate in the premier class under the Alfa Romeo name for another year. In 2026, new regulations will come into force with simpler and cheaper engines running entirely on sustainable fuel. The proportion of electric drives in cars is also increasing sharply.
“There’s a way that costs are regulated,” says Baker. “That means equal opportunities for everyone. All teams face the same challenge for 2026. If you do well, chances are you’ll be at the top in 2026.”
Formula 1 car Audi
Audi previously showed its electric Formula 1 car for the premier class. The performance of this car would increase significantly. It is not yet known how many kW (hp) the electric drive will produce. The current 1.6-liter turbo engine delivers 400 kW (544 hp). If you want to know more about Audi’s new Formula 1 car, click here.
