Tax plan 2023: This will cost gas and taxes next year

2023 is upon us and the Senate has approved a new tax plan. In this article we list all changes for driving in the Netherlands. What will petrol, vehicle and road tax cost next year?

Not only the taxes will change compared to this year, the fines will also change in price. If you want to know what the fine costs, read the traffic fines for 2023 here.

Tax plan: This is what driving will cost in 2023

1. Motor vehicle tax 2023

In 2023 the motor vehicle tax – officially called motor vehicle tax – will be increased. This with a share of 4.75 percent. This is the part excluding the state surcharge rate, the amount that the state charges on the state tax. Until 2024 you will not pay road tax for an electric car.

2. Gasoline more expensive from July 1st (due to reintroduction tax)

In order to compensate for the extreme increase in petrol prices, the prices for petrol, diesel and LPG were reduced on April 1st. This tax cut was supposed to end on December 31, but the cabinet has extended the measures until July 1, 2023. By then, petrol will be more expensive. The consumption tax on one liter of petrol is then 0.789 euros.

3. More BPM

As if cars are not expensive enough in our country, the BPM rate will increase next year. For every newly sold car with CO2 emissions of 1 gram per kilometer or more, you will have to pay 400 euros as a fixed BPM rate in 2023. An additional surcharge applies to diesel cars if they emit 73 grams of CO2 per kilometer or more. This surcharge is 94.30 per gram of CO2. That is now 86.67 euros for diesel that emits 75 grams of CO2 or more per kilometer.

The brackets in which the BPM amount is set by tax collectors have been reduced by 2.3 percent. This means that a car’s BPM can increase year-on-year while emissions have not increased. Electric cars are exempt from BPM.

4. Further addition

If your car emits more than 1 gram of CO2 per kilometer, you pay a 22 percent surcharge. The surcharge applies if you have a company car and drive more than 500 private kilometers per year. By default, you pay a 22 percent surcharge for your car. Do you drive electric? Then you pay 16 percent on the first 30 grand and 22 percent on the amount over 30 grand.

5. More mileage allowance for 2023 and 2024 (tax-free)

From January 1, 2023, the mileage allowance will increase. That was 0.19 euros per kilometer and that is 0.21 cents per kilometer. From January 1, 2024, the tax-free mileage allowance will be EUR 0.22 per kilometer.

6. Subsidy for electric cars

Will you buy a new electric car in 2023? Then you can apply for a grant of 2,950 euros. You can apply for a subsidy of 2,000 euros for an electrical event. At least if the glass isn’t empty…
