Not just expressing opinions: FIA rules for Formula 1 drivers tightened

Formula 1 has grown in popularity in the Netherlands in recent years. But the premier class has always been in the spotlight. Just to put the spotlight on the sport, Formula 1 drivers like the FIA’s Max Verstappen are less allowed to voice their opinions without permission.

This applies above all to the expression of political and religious messages. But the drivers also have to ask the Motorsport Association for permission to send personal messages about the races.

This does not immediately mean that Formula 1 drivers are no longer allowed to express their opinions. Of course, Max Verstappen can say what he wants outside of the race. But around the races, he has to get written approval from the FIA ​​for anything that could harm the neutrality of the racing class. Until now, F1 drivers were simply not allowed to advertise political or religious interests.

What do the rules mean specifically for Formula 1 drivers?

What does that mean specifically? We find a good example with Sebastian Vettel. He wore a helmet with the colors of the LGBT community. The German has already received a warning from the FIA ​​for this.

Hamilton also took such an action to make the world a little better. He wore a shirt against racism and police brutality. He was also approached by the FIA. Then there was a ban on wearing your own jersey on the Formula 1 podium.

Not very strict

The question, of course, is whether the drivers will stick to the rules in the 2023 Formula 1 season. The Motorsport Association also points out that these regulations are not handled very strictly. “You can still talk about things that are important to you, as long as we say it’s okay,” the amendments read. It is unclear what the consequences of violating the new FIA rules will be. In any case, a fine does not deter Formula 1 drivers. After all, Max Verstappen is one of the 500 richest Dutch people.
