Why hardly anyone in Germany wants to work for Tesla
Tesla has a problem. Not many people want to work in the Gigafactory in Berlin. And the people who work there are dissatisfied and want to leave.
The plant in Berlin went into operation last March. The goal was to build around 5,000 cars per week by the end of 2022, but that number was far from being reached.
Is Tesla having trouble recruiting staff?
The problem lies, among other things, in recruitment. The Gigafactory has 12,000 jobs, of which only 7,000 are filled. Also, Tesla fails to capture people.
Bad working conditions in a chaotic factory
According to Wired, employees are leaving because salaries are too low. An anonymous employee continues to speak of total chaos in the factory. “Many of my colleagues call in sick. You are not motivated. The working conditions are bad.”
Germans do not see Tesla as a good employer
Tesla is unlikely to find enough staff, according to a labor market specialist. The Germans see the American manufacturer as a bad employer. The conditions at BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen are significantly better.
Disputes with the unions and disputes with the workforce
Many Germans are union members. And let Elon Musk be rabidly anti-union. According to IG Metall – one of the most powerful trade unions in Germany – salaries at Tesla are around 20 percent below those of comparable companies.
Tesla has raised salaries for new employees, but that has upset current employees. Because IG Metall is threatening to sue, the company has now also paid the rest of the workforce a salary.
