Fines 2023 – phone stuck? That will cost you 60 percent more than in 2020!
We live in expensive times with high prices for fuel, energy, food and much more. Traffic fines are also increasing. In 2023 you will pay around 10 percent more on average if you commit a violation. Below you will find an overview of the fines for 2023.
To start with the outlier: hold your cell phone behind the steering wheel. This is an increasing problem in road traffic and that is why the fine for next year has been set at a whopping 380 euros! Mind you, according to Independer, which publishes the amount of the fines, the exact amounts have yet to be confirmed by the House of Representatives.
Fine for phone use significantly higher
Reducing mobile phone use is clearly a government priority as fines have risen sharply in recent years. In 2020 you got a print of 240 euros if you were caught. For the next year, this amount will be 60 percent (!) higher. Until December 31, the fine is still 350 euros. From January 1st it will increase by 30 euros.

- Calling while driving – 380 euros (2022: 350 euros)
- Driving through a red traffic light – 280 euros (2022: 250 euros)

Above-average increase due to inflation
The average traffic fine will increase by about 10 percent in 2023. A year ago it was about 2 percent. The difference can be explained by increased inflation. The fine amounts are adjusted according to the consumer price index. Is that wise now? Well, if you follow the traffic rules, you don’t have to pay a high fine.
