The new Peugeot 408 is almost as expensive as the 508
Seriously, it saves less than 1000 euros. And that raises two questions. Is the Peugeot 408 so expensive? Or is the 508 so cheap?
What do you compare the new 408 to? Peugeot calls it fastback, but there’s also something to be said for calling it a coupe SUV, four-door coupe or crossover. The Peugeot 408 stands on the platform of the 308, has the same dashboard but is more than 30 centimeters taller. In the French manufacturer’s product range, it falls between 3008 and 508.
New Peugeot 408 from 41,490 euros
The price comparison with the two Peugeot models is not entirely fair, because the equipment lines do not quite match. The 408 starts at 41,490 euros. For that you get a 1.2 PureTech 130 in the Allure version. 3008 and 508 with the same drive are not available as Allure, but as Allure Pack Business for 39,560 and 42,620 euros respectively.
It probably won’t captivate buyers as much because the 408 is quite a unique appearance. The traditional D segment, to which the 508 belongs, is losing popularity. With the 408, Peugeot says it has a nice alternative at the top of the C-segment market.
Two plug-in hybrids with 180 and 225 hp
Above the Peugeot 408 1.2 PureTech 130 are two plug-in hybrids with 180 and 225 hp. They are available from 46,160 (level: Allure) and 49,660 euros (level: Allure Pack). All Plug-408 come standard with the Pack Safety Plus, which includes an automatic emergency braking function, and the Pack Drive Assist 1, which includes an adaptive cruise control. All 408s have an eight-speed automatic transmission.
