Jeepy McJeepface – The public can come up with a name for an electric jeep

Oh Jeep, what are you getting yourself into? The American SUV brand is looking for a unique name for its electric Wagoneer S and wants to appeal to the public. Did Jeep forget the Boaty McBoatface fiasco?

In 2016, the British Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) was looking for a name for its new expedition ship. There were no restrictions, the public could choose whatever they wanted. A former radio host jokingly suggested Boaty McBoatface and it quickly became the most popular name with a third of the votes.

The British government ignored the poll results and ended up naming the ship Sir David Attenborough. As a kind of semi-soft compromise, an onboard remote-controlled submarine drone was given the name Boaty McBoatface.

2020 also showed that you should never ask the public for a name. The Municipality of Velsen and Rijkswaterstaat were looking for a name for the new sea lock in IJmuiden. The three most popular entries were Irma Sluis (on the sign language interpreter at the Corona press conferences), Sluisje McSluisface and De Sluizenmoeder. It eventually became Zeesluis IJmuiden, a name that had only been submitted five times.

Jeep Wagoneer S non-final name for SUV

Anyway, Jeep doesn’t remember that for a while either. The brand recently unveiled a study of a large electric SUV due for launch in 2025: the Wagoneer S. At least that’s not the final name, according to Jeep CEO Christian Meunier. He wants to enlist the help of the Jeep community to choose one.

There will be competition on social media, he says. Jeep will already make some suggestions to give fans some direction. It’s not going to be a Jeepy McJeepface farce. Jeep reviews all submitted names, creates a pre-selection and checks potential names for copyrights.

‘Wagoneer S’ with 600 hp and a range of 640 kilometers

The Wagoneer S will top the Jeep lineup alongside the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The premium electric SUV will deliver 600 hp, 0 to 60 mph (0 – 97 km/h) acceleration of 3.5 seconds and a range of around 400 miles.
