Converting a van into a motorhome? You have to comply with this

You want to go on vacation in your RV this summer, but buying a ready-made RV doesn’t suit you. You’ve found an affordable van. Now we have to convert this vehicle so that it is eligible for the quarter tariff (camper tariff).

In 1994, the quarter tariff for campers, also known as the camper tariff, was introduced. This means that campers only pay 25 percent of the vehicle tax. If you rent out your motorhome, you must pay 50 percent vehicle tax. That will change in 2026 and as a mobile home owner you will have to pay significantly more.

Campers are entitled to quarter price

Nevertheless, the camper tariff remains attractive. If you are converting a van, the vehicle must meet a number of requirements to be eligible for the quarter price. Without these requirements, you cannot have the vehicle approved as a motorhome by the RDW.

What requirements do you have to meet for the camper tariff?

First, you need to be able to place an imaginary block 170 centimeters high, 200 centimeters long and 90 centimeters wide inside the RV. This affects the space behind the front seats. There must be at least two of these seats, one for the driver and one for the passenger. Be careful not to place wooden benches.

Additionally, a permanent table is also a requirement if you want the quarter price for your RV. This can be removable. The camper must also have at least 2 sleeping places; the chairs can be used for this. A double bunk is at least 180 centimeters long and 110 centimeters wide. With two separate sleeping spaces, the length is also at least 180 centimeters. The width should be 60 centimeters.

In addition, the camper must offer two fixed and lockable storage options and have a kitchenette inside. This kitchen unit is at least 60 centimeters high and has a water connection with a sink, tap and drain. Cooking facilities are also mandatory. This can be a gas stove or a microwave.

Is your motorhome completely finished? Then you need to go to an RDW testing center for inspection. Is it approved? Then you can submit an application for a special rate for vehicle tax. You then pay a quarterly vehicle tax (the camper rate).
