The Netherlands is one of the ten cheapest countries to own a car

Driving is associated with high costs. Think about insurance premiums, road tax and fuel costs. Nevertheless, the Netherlands scores in the top 10 cheapest countries to own a car.

This emerges from a British study Junk car comparison. This included looking at the average price of some popular new cars, insurance premiums, fuel costs and even repair expenses. All of these costs were then compared to the average annual salary in each country.

Top 10 Cheapest Countries to Own a Car

This resulted in a list of expensive and cheap countries where you can own a car. Accordingly Junk car comparison The Netherlands belongs to the latter group. Below you can find the entire top 10.

In total, car costs were examined in no fewer than 98 countries. A fourth place for the Netherlands is therefore not so bad. Our colleagues at Manners have previously shown that the Dutch earn relatively high wages, which could be a possible explanation for the high ranking.

On the other hand, new cars in many other countries (think of our neighbors Germany and Belgium) are often cheaper to purchase due to more lenient taxes. Fuel is also a lot more expensive here than in many other countries.

Top 10 countries where owning a car is most expensive

Which countries do we find on the other side of the spectrum? As it turns out, mostly South American countries. This often requires paying several years’ salary to purchase and maintain a car.

But nowhere is it as expensive as in Turkey, where owning a car costs almost seven years’ salary, according to this study. Phew, a togg like that suddenly becomes very expensive. The entire top 10 most expensive countries to own a car can be found below.
