The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is now a hybrid
Professional soccer players blessed with deep pockets will undoubtedly use the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 to show off at PC Hooftstraat. It’s a shame, because the off-road vehicle really comes into its own on the very expensive cobblestone road.
Officially, this version of the G-Class should be called a new generation. After all, the model series is no longer 463, but 465. At first glance, however, you wouldn’t say that, as Mercedes of course sticks firmly to the iconic lines off-road vehicle.
What’s new on the Mercedes-AMG G 63?
In the video above we discuss the new G-Wagon in detail. New to the Über-G is the Hyperblue Magno paint finish of the AMG Performance variant, but the olive green variant with the AMG Off-Road Package Pro is also clearly visible. For the first time, the huge roof rack, ladder and a spare wheel holder are available for the AMG variant.
In addition, there is now an AMG logo on the hood, new wheel designs (six in total, from 20 to 22 inches) are available and the A-pillar is designed slightly differently. The latter is hardly noticeable, but is intended to make the Mercedes-AMG G 63 (in combination with more insulation material) a quieter travel companion. The interior features other luxury features such as heated and cooled cup holders, heated armrests, a new AMG performance steering wheel and – finally – keyless entry.
V8 gets an electric boost
More of the same under the hood. This means that the 585 hp (and 850 Nm) 4.0-liter V8 can still be found at the front of the G 63. The starter generator is new and helps. This means the G 63 is now a mild hybrid with a 48-volt system. The electric motor provides an additional 20 hp and 200 Nm of torque.
This affects the time from 0 to 100. That shrinks from 4.5 seconds to 4.3 seconds. The top speed is still 220 km/h, but those who opt for the AMG Performance Package can accelerate up to 240 km/h.
The V8 in the G 500 will disappear. The eight-cylinder engine is replaced by an in-line six-cylinder. This 3.0-liter block produces 449 hp and 560 Nm of torque, but there is also 20 hp and 200 Nm of electrical assistance. G 500 and G 450 d are now also mild hybrids.
Brilliant new chassis
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 has further ingenious innovations under the skin. So the chassis was tackled. All damper chambers are now connected via aluminum tubes. A Mercedes engineer assures us that these are well hidden along the ladder frame and therefore cannot be damaged so easily.
This system, which is somewhat reminiscent of the new Panamera lowrider, offers more control over the chassis movements. The G-Class can actively prevent or allow certain rolling tendencies and wheel movements. This means that the versions with the AMG Offroad Package Pro now have two new offroad modes. Versions with the AMG Performance Package have new driving modes for the racetrack. In any case, you don’t need that in PC Hooftstraat.
