Skoda Superb 2024: Better offer than the Volkswagen Passat?
Halfway through its first life cycle, the Skoda Superb appeared to be short-lived. The then Volkswagen boss saw no benefit in this for the large company. The Czechs wanted to keep the Superb in production at all costs. This was followed by a station (the Skoda Superb Combi) for the new generations and there are now more than 260,000 Superbs registered in the Netherlands.
Today the roles are reversed. We can no longer see the Superb as the brother of the Passat, but the other way around. Both models are therefore built side by side at the factory in Bratislava, a Skoda factory. Do you have to choose between both models? Then take a look at our driving test with the Volkswagen Passat.
Skoda Superb Combi as a space miracle
The Superb has become a little longer, which frees up space in the trunk again, as befits a Skoda. At 690 liters, the space in the station wagon is identical to the trunk in the Passat. However, this Skoda is also available as a hatchback and then you can take 645 liters of stuff with you.
The interior of the Skoda Superb is basically identical to that of the Volkswagen Passat. The direction selector lever is now located behind the steering wheel. Unlike the Passat, you will find rotary knobs on the center console that can be used to operate several functions. Ergonomically good interior. In fact, these dials make operation more pleasant than the Passat.
Choice of powertrains more limited than the Volkswagen Passat
The Skoda Superb (Combi) is available as a 150 hp mild hybrid and as a 204 hp plug-in hybrid. At least these are the engines available in the Netherlands. You may already know these powertrains from the Volkswagen Passat. The plug-in has a 25.7 kWh battery, of which 19.7 kWh is usable. This makes it possible to drive completely electrically for up to 100 kilometers. Charging is even possible using a 50 kW fast charger. In short, a very useful plug-in hybrid. In contrast to the Skoda Superb, the Volkswagen Passat also has a 272 hp drive.
This is really the end. The Skoda Superb (Combi) is also available with the adaptive chassis called DCC Pro, which independently adapts the dampers to the road surface. Oddly enough, this option is equipped with an electronic limited slip differential on the Volkswagen Passat, but not on the Skoda. But what should the average lease driver do with a limited-slip differential?
Price
In any case, the Superb is an ideal travel car. Especially in combination with the additional sound insulation. Whether you should choose the Volkswagen Passat or the Skoda Superb Comgi depends largely on the price. The new Superb Combi has a starting price of 44,990 euros. For this money you can buy the 1.5 liter mild hybrid. That’s 4,000 euros cheaper than the Passat. You only pay 2,000 euros more for the plug-in hybrid, which means the price of this drive is significantly lower than the price of the Volkswagen Passat. The new Skoda Superb is expected in the Netherlands in spring 2024.
Great combo

score
Plus points
- Room
- Operating concept
Negatives
- 150 hp is a bit low for the size of the car
- Loss of space plug-in hybrid
The Skoda Superb Combi offers (almost) everything you get in the Volkswagen Passat, but for less money. At the same time, the car no longer looks like a cheap brand like Skodas used to. The interior is huge and the controls work well. In short: an ideal travel car.
