Gasoline is very expensive in the Netherlands. In fact, we are one of the five countries with the highest fuel costs in the world. Although the price can fluctuate significantly here, the price increase is never as extreme as in a well-known vacation destination in Central America: Cuba.

The high price of gasoline in the Netherlands is partly due to the taxes you have to pay on fuel here. Nevertheless, excise taxes in our country are relatively low compared to those of the Central American island.

Gasoline was generally cheap in the holiday destination. Until Friday, around 25 Cuban pesos per liter will be paid. That’s about 96 cents. However, due to government intervention, the price of a liter of gasoline will be 132 pesos (5.08 euros) from Friday. Premium gasoline even costs 156 pesos (6 euros). That’s a lot for a Dutchman, let alone a Cuban. The average minimum wage in Cuba is 2,100 pesos, about 81 euros. Less than half a tank is easily equivalent to a month’s wages!

The huge increase in gasoline prices is due to interventions by the Cuban government. The country’s government is trying to reduce the budget deficit by increasing the price of gasoline fivefold. The price of electricity is also rising sharply, by 25 percent.

Cuba has been in a difficult financial situation for some time. The economy has shrunk significantly and inflation has risen sharply.

The most expensive country to refuel

Due to the increased gasoline prices, Cuba will suddenly become the most expensive country to fill up with gasoline starting next Friday. In second place is Hong Kong, where you pay just under 3 euros for a liter of gasoline. Iceland is in third place with more than 2.20 euros per liter.
