Why Volvo manufacturer Geely will launch 240 satellites and has already started

In the entire history of Autovisie.nl we have written very little about satellites. Simply because, apart from Elon Musk, few automaker CEOs are involved in the launch of objects. However, Volvo manufacturer Geely plans to send 240 satellites into orbit. In fact, there are already eleven of them.

The company that launches and operates the satellites is called Geespace, a subsidiary of the Chinese company Geely. The reason they launch the objects into space is not because they want to build an internet network like Elon Musk.

Why the Volvo manufacturer is working on satellites

The manufacturer of Volvo and Polestar, among others, is launching the satellites with the main purpose of setting up an accurate location service. The position of cars can be precisely determined using satellites. This is useful not only for self-driving cars and navigation, but also for fleet management and public transportation.

There are already Geely models that can communicate with the satellites: the Zeekr 001 FR, the Zeekr 007 and the Geely Galaxy E8.

Geely wants to have 240 of them in orbit

In a press release, the Volvo maker said it plans to expand the network to 240 satellites and “provide global positioning services with high centimeter-level precision.” The objects also have AI remote sensing capabilities that enable the creation of high-resolution images at a height of 1 to 5 meters.

The objects now in low Earth orbit were launched from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center. If everything goes according to plan, Geely will have 72 satellites in orbit by 2025.
