Autovisie already knew it three years ago: The Opel Frontera is coming back
Autovisie Grand Vizier Sjoerd van Bilsen used his crystal ball three years ago and saw the contours of the Opel Frontera emerge. That’s why it’s no surprise to us that this has happened.
Well, let’s not make it more exciting than it is, because the old Opel Frontera was a pretty serious off-road vehicle with a ladder chassis and the new one won’t be.
Opel Frontera becomes affordable
It succeeds the Opel Crossland and has a fully electric drive. At least that’s what we conclude from the accompanying press release, which makes vague references to the Frontera’s affordability.
“The newcomer will do it […] “Continuation of Opel’s long tradition of making innovative mobility available to a wide range of customers at an attractive price.”
This PR talk doesn’t make us much wiser, but we still suspect that we’re dealing with the new Crossland and therefore not the successor to the Grandland.
Based on Citroën ë-C3
What does that mean specifically? That the Opel Frontera will share its technology with the SUV version of the Citroën C3, which will be launched later this year as an electric car but also with a combustion engine.
We expect the starting price of the Frontera to be around 30,000 euros. There is no doubt that it will be more compact than the older Frontera. As a five-door car it was almost 4.7 meters long.
Basically, the original Opel Frontera was an Isuzu MU that was built from 1989 to 2004. The model had different names: Chevrolet Rodeo, Honda Passport and Landwind X6.
