This is the actual range of the BYD Dolphin

This is the actual range of the BYD Dolphin

Electric cars usually consume more than the manufacturers state. The result is less good range than you might expect. This time we are testing the BYD Dolphin’s driving range.

The difference between the stated WLTP range and the actual range is large for some vehicles. For this reason, Autovisie tests the actual average range in practice with the air conditioning and radio on. This gives you a better idea of how far you can actually get with an electric vehicle.

BYD Dolphin

Autovisie drives the BYD Dolphin in the comfort version. Only with this equipment is the 60.4 kWh battery (with a range of 427 kilometers) available for a ready-to-drive price of 35,490 euros.

The electric car has a multi-link rear suspension, DC charging up to 88 kW, 204 hp as well as heated seats and front parking sensors.

The actual range of the BYD Dolphin

The test with the BYD Dolphin took place at a temperature just above freezing. This temperature has a major influence on the range.

The “blade” battery developed and produced by BYD itself with above-average large and stable cells seems particularly useful for keeping costs down. In practice, we didn’t have more than 334 kilometers left of the 427 kilometers of range. At 18.2 kWh per 100 kilometers, consumption was significantly higher than the stated 18.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. Please note that all electric car batteries perform worse at low temperatures.

BYD
WLTP consumption average 15.9 kWh/100 km
Measured consumption 18.2 kWh/100 km
Range WLTP/measured 427km/341km
Max. measured charging speed 89kW
Charging time 10-80%/measured 40 mins/40 mins

The BYD Dolphin fast charging station achieved exactly the promised 89 kW, but at 50 percent charge there is only 50 kW left. This means you have to wait 40 minutes for a 10 to 80 percent charge (as promised by the manufacturer).

The consumption round

Autovisie independently tests consumption in the Netherlands as part of the Autovisie double test. Please note that consumption may vary as it depends on your driving style, but also on weather conditions and many other factors.
