The new Dodge Charger lives up to its name and angers fans
All good things come to an end, including the loud V8 at the front of the legendary Dodge Charger. The brand shows the first images of its latest electrified Charger. This iconic name fits an electric car surprisingly well.
Dodge is not the first brand to bear this glorious name Muscle car sticks to the back of an electric vehicle. Previously, it was Ford that called its electric SUV the Mustang Mach-E – to the dismay of purists. Apart from a few design features, this electric car has little in common with the loud sports coupes of the past.
Dodge Charger as an electric car
That’s different with this new electric Dodge. The brand itself has shared photos of a pre-production version of the model. Although Dodge is still a little unclear about the identity of the model, it is most likely the new electric Charger. The car looks exactly like the Charger Daytona SRT EV concept car shown in 2022.
The long hood might make you think there’s a huge V8 underneath, but that’s not the case. The same bonnet can also be seen on the previously shown study model. In addition, Stellantis had previously announced that it wanted to pull the plug on the Dodge Charger and Challenger…or plug it in. It just depends on how you look at it.
Sporty two-door electric car
Even if the electric charger cannot yet be clearly seen from every angle, it is clear that the EV has sporty ambitions. You can also see similarities with the brand’s current sports coupe: the Challenger.
After being known as a coupe for five generations, the Dodge Charger became a sedan in 2006. This electric car has two doors, meaning the Charger returns to its roots. The question is whether this reference to the past is enough to electrify this for purists Muscle car embrace.
Angry fans
The first reactions are often negative. “Give us back the V8,” reads a popular comment on Dodge’s social media post. “With the rich history of V8 engines, who would have thought this would be a good idea?” writes another. It is hoped that the brand will calm down over the course of the year. The new Dodge Charger will come onto the market at the end of 2024.
