Vehicle tax 2026: 3 electric cars that will be extremely expensive to drive
Electric cars are usually significantly heavier than models with combustion engines. Simply because they have to carry a heavy battery. If the rules for electric cars remain the same, this means that you will have to pay a high road tax for some electric cars.
To give an idea of how much road tax can be paid for an electric car, we present three heavy-duty models that will (soon) be available on the Dutch market.
Three electric cars that are extremely expensive to drive due to vehicle tax
Of course, not every Dutch person drives a big, expensive car. We previously calculated the vehicle tax in 2026 for a rather average Volkswagen ID.3. From 2025, users of electric vehicles will have to pay vehicle tax, but will still receive a 75 percent discount this year. The discount applies to the basic price. The basic price corresponds to that of a gasoline car. For simplicity we choose the province of South Holland, in other provinces it may be a little more or cheaper.
1. Lotus Eletre
The Lotus Eletre is a good super SUV that we are deeply impressed with. The disadvantage of the electric car is that it weighs 2,640 kilograms.
The weight means that in 2026 you will pay 535 euros per quarter. Your Lotus Eletre costs 2,140 euros in vehicle tax per year!
2. Volvo EX90
The Volvo EX90 is also a tough guy. The electric car weighs 2,718 kilograms.
You then pay 561 euros in vehicle tax per quarter in the province of South Holland. The Volvo EX90 costs 2,244 euros in vehicle tax per year
3.BMW i7
The BMW i7 weighs 2,595 kilograms, making it a very heavy sedan. You pay the same for the car as you would for the Lotus Eletre.
The gigantic amounts make it clear once again how contradictory the government’s plans are regarding the electrification of the Dutch vehicle fleet. The impact is already being felt. Sales of electric cars are stagnating due to the threat of vehicle tax.
