That’s why Americans are only now allowed to buy an Audi A2
The Audi A2 is a special car that places great value on low fuel consumption. Even though not many enthusiasts are interested in the hatchback, the technology and design are unique. The model was never a huge success, but with 176,205 sold, the A2 is still occasionally seen on the road. At least in Europe.
The compact, lightweight German was not allowed to drive in America. Only this year will the model be allowed to enter the land of hamburgers and pick-up trucks.
Only now are Americans allowed to buy an Audi A2
But why are Americans only now allowed to drive the Audi A2? It all has to do with the regulations. There is a law in the USA that protects American car manufacturers from gray imports.
Since 1998, cars that were not originally delivered to the country are no longer allowed to be imported into the United States. Only if cars are 25 years old or older can a model be imported into America. After all, according to the law, these are collector’s items.
Other 25 year old cars
The Audi A2 isn’t the only car that can be shipped to the US for driving around this year. The Nissan Silvia S15 and Ferrari 360 also date from 1999 and are welcome from this year.
