That’s how much subsidy will be released next week for electric vehicle buyers in 2024
Do you want to buy a new electric car in 2024? Then you’re eligible for SEPP, an electric vehicle subsidy that car buyers (and those who want to lease) can take advantage of.
However, you cannot currently submit applications. From Tuesday, January 9th, the government will open the lid on the subsidy pot. This includes 58 million euros for this year.
Electric vehicle sales are disappointing
SEPP, that stands for Funding program for electric cars for private individualsis intended to accommodate doubters who swallow the high prices for electric vehicles. The project started in summer 2020.
The aim was to slowly reduce the funding level. For example, it rose from 4,000 euros in 2020 to 2,950 euros last year. However, the 2023 funding pot for new electric cars was still a third full at the end of December.
The number of new sales of electric vehicles is therefore somewhat disappointing. For this reason, it was decided some time ago not to reduce the SEPP amount for new electric vehicles to 2,550 euros in 2024, but to leave it at 2,950 euros. At the same time, the Dutch government is hurting itself (and its green ideals) by making electric car owners pay a high vehicle tax from 2026. Well, that doesn’t exactly encourage people to buy an electric vehicle.
Subsidy for used electric cars
Sales of used electric vehicles appear to be improving. At least the 32.4 million euros in the SEPP budget that the government had earmarked for used electric cars in 2023 were used more eagerly last year than the funding for new electric cars. On November 20th there was not a cent left in the funding pot. As before, in 2024 there will be a subsidy of 2,000 euros for a used electric vehicle. However, the total funding amount for used cars is slightly lower at 29.4 million euros.
Requirements for SEPP
New electric cars must meet a number of requirements to be eligible for funding. For example, used cars must have originally been delivered as electric vehicles (no conversion projects), have a WLTP range of at least 120 kilometers and cost a maximum of 45,000. Used cars must have cost between 12,000 and 45,000 euros new. In addition, the electric car must be in your name for at least 3 years.
The central government will begin processing applications again from January 9th. On December 27, 2024 at 12 p.m. the lid of the funding pot for electric cars will be closed again. The question is whether it is empty.
