These 5 legendary cars will be exempt from vehicle tax from Monday
The new year is almost here. Even though we expect a lot of new electric cars in 2024, which doesn’t always make enthusiasts happy, there is also good news to report every year when it comes to classic cars. These five legendary cars will be exempt from vehicle tax from Monday.
You don’t pay vehicle tax for classic cars that are 40 years old or older. The regulation will remain in force until 1988 in 2028.
Five legendary cars will be exempt from vehicle tax from Monday
Every year legendary cars are exempt from vehicle tax. At least if you find an example from the first year of manufacture. Previous year models are easier to find than tax-free classic cars.
1. Ferrari 288 GTO
The Ferrari 288 GTO went into production in 1984 and was the basis of the The big 5 the brand, which also includes F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari.
Only 272 examples of the legendary super sports car with a 400 hp 2.9-liter V8 were produced. Finding a first year 288 GTO is very difficult. But if you can buy a Ferrari 288 GTO, you probably don’t have to worry about road tax.
2. Lancia Theme
The Lancia Thema also had its first year of production in 1984, although there are only a few examples of this model in this year. In the Netherlands, the oldest used car for sale was built in 1987.
The version with Ferrari’s V8 was only delivered from 1987. The most beautiful Lancia Thema will one day be exempt from vehicle tax.
3. Volvo 740
The Volvo 740 was completely different. From the year it was introduced in 1984, a turbo model with a petrol engine was also available. This square family car features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 160 horsepower and, of course, rear-wheel drive.
In the Netherlands you can already find a Volvo 740 built in 1984. This example will be exempt from vehicle tax in a few days. This is a 2.3 GL version. Not quite the version you wanted, but a nice base for a drift car, for example.
4. Toyota MR2
The first Toyota MR2 was born in 1984 and is a special sports car. The chassis was developed by Lotus and with a lightweight engine behind the front seats capable of turning over 7,500 rpm, it’s an impressive machine.
It is difficult to find models made in 1984. Not many were produced in the first year. Most of the cars built this year remained in Asia. In the European sales lists you won’t even find a used car from the first year of construction.
5. Seat Ibiza
The same applies to the Seat Ibiza. The first generation was built from 1984, but finding a model from that year is difficult. There are currently no tax-free copies for sale in the Netherlands.
Although the Ibiza was not the most beautiful car of its time, it laid the foundation for a legendary model.
There were versions for car enthusiasts. For example, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder with turbo. This engine block was even developed together with Porsche. All 1.5 engines therefore say “System Porsche”. The turbo Ibiza produced 109 hp and sprinted from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in around 10 seconds.
