Remaining frying fat from the Oliebollen? You can drive with it!
It’s almost New Year’s Eve and that means you’ll be eating oliebollen and drinking champagne. Do you bake oliebollen yourself? Then you can use this frying oil to go back to work on January 2nd.
Even though you may no longer want to have frying fat in your car after reading this article, it is important that you at least take the used frying fat to a collection point. It can have dire consequences both in nature and in your sink.
Only diesel cars can possibly run on vegetable oil.
In many cases, driving with cooking oil is not a good idea
The bad news first: frying fat can also have serious consequences in the car. Because the viscosity (viscosity) of the frying oil you used for your Oliebollen is different from that of diesel, this can cause engines to start poorly, deliver less power and even have a shorter lifespan. The “thicker” oil can cause parts to become clogged. The mixture does not burn as optimally as diesel. Damage to the fuel system cannot be ruled out either.
If you drive a modern diesel that still has appreciable value, then of course you won’t put cooking oil in the car. In addition, the technology of modern diesel engines is simply not suitable for frying fat.
Older diesel engines can process your old Oliebollen oil better
However, the technology of older diesels is more resistant to thicker oil. If you want to run on vegetable oil only, you will need to adjust the glow plugs, injectors, fuel lines and fuel pump. The liquid must be preheated. If you mix it with regular diesel, this soon seems easy. In the Netherlands there are several owners of old diesel engines who use around 20 percent cooking oil. You must first filter the olive oil pieces from the vegetable oil.
Driving with cooking oil is illegal
Suppose you have an old cheap diesel and want to partially run it on vegetable oil? Then this is not officially allowed. There are no excise taxes on fuel and driving with cooking oil can result in a fine. But how do the police find out? It’s simple: the fumes from your exhaust smell like what you ate on New Year’s Eve: Oliebollen. Driving on the used material is possible, but whether you want…
