Pay attention! From tomorrow onwards you will only be allowed to drive at a speed of 30 km/h in Amsterdam

You better step on the accelerator today because tomorrow the fun will be over in Amsterdam. Then the speed limit in large parts of the city will be increased from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.

The headline above this article is only a tiny bit exaggerated, because the speed limit is not 30 km/h in the entire city, but in 80 percent of it.

Center of Amsterdam

Previously this speed only applied to the absolute center of Amsterdam, but from tomorrow almost the entire area within the ring road and parts outside of it must be adhered to.

Security throughout the city

Why is Amsterdam lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h? Increasing traffic safety and reducing noise pollution. 4,400 new signs were recently installed.

The stickers will be taken off tonight

There are still stickers on it at the moment, but they will all be removed next night. Tomorrow the police will have an overview because mobile speed cameras and radar vehicles are now in use.

So stick to the speed, no matter how frustrating it is. Because yes, 30 km/h feels far too slow on many roads. Still, Amsterdam city government says residents asked for it.

Amsterdam is much safer

A study shows that 67 percent of Amsterdam residents consider the area’s traffic to be unsafe. More than 80 percent believe that speeding is the cause.

In theory – and perhaps in practice – lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h should reduce the number of accidents in the capital by 20 to 30 percent.

On paper, that would mean the community would go from 20 to 16 to 14 deaths per year and from about 800 injuries to 640 to 560.
