Here’s how to shift gears in this electric Hyundai

Hyundai announces more details about the new Ioniq 5 N, a shifting electric car. Will the Koreans’ first electric performance model make you forget about gasoline cars?

A lot has already been said and written about the EV. The expectations of the model are therefore high. They’ve proven that Hyundai’s N division can make a nice, hot hatchback with the i30.

Changing gears in an electric car

But does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N make you forget about this model? NO. This is not just because the electric car will have completely different driving characteristics due to its weight and drivetrain, among other things. The electric vehicle also has functionalities that are intended to imitate a gasoline car.

It starts with a sound system with eight speakers in the interior and two on the outside of the car. These play engine sounds.

Nothing new, as the Abarth 500, for example, is already equipped with it. The sound from the speakers is similar to, and even has, that of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Bang and bang. Of course, the sound can also be turned off.

Hyundai goes beyond pure sound with the Ioniq 5 N. There’s even a mode where you have switching points. The N e-Shift simulates the shifting moments as if it were an eight-speed DCT by delivering a shock. In this mode you actually have to switch with your fins. If you don’t do that, there is even an artificial rev limiter.
