Chinese batteries in European electric cars: Stellantis closes important deal
Chinese manufacturers are increasingly being supported by European car brands. Incidence If you can’t beat them, join them. Stellantis will also use Chinese batteries for electric cars. The manufacturer makes a deal with Catl.
Most car enthusiasts are familiar with Stellantis. The large manufacturer has Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Citroën, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot and other brands in its portfolio. A large proportion of cars will have a battery pack in the future, so this is an important deal.
Chinese batteries in European cars from Stellantis
It’s not like every Stellantis car will immediately receive a battery pack from Catl. The company specializes in particular in LFP batteries. Such a battery has both advantages and disadvantages. The most important thing about this story is that LFP batteries can be manufactured more cheaply than NMC batteries. These battery types will therefore primarily be used in cheaper electric vehicles.
The fact that Chinese batteries are in European or American electric cars is nothing new. For example, in 2022 we already had a Tesla Model 3 with a Chinese battery as a long-term tester. And this year we were at the BYD battery factory, where, for example, the Model Y battery is manufactured.
Catl
Catl made headlines earlier this year with a major battery breakthrough. The company, which also supplies battery packs to Tesla, says it has developed an LFP battery that can charge a range of 400 kilometers in 10 minutes, even at temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius.
The total range of the battery pack is said to be 700 kilometers. The exact specifications of this battery pack are not yet known, but it shows that Catl is a leader when it comes to batteries.
The battery should be installed in the first electric car as early as the first quarter of 2024. According to reports, this is the Luxeed S7. It is unclear whether this battery will ever be included in a Stellantis product.
