Leaked! The extreme trailer weight of the Tesla Cybertruck is disappointing
Slowly but surely more and more is becoming known about the Tesla Cybertruck. This time, the pickup’s towing weight has been leaked. And that’s a bit disappointing.
“Leaked” may not be the right term. A poster was spotted on a sort of billboard near the Tesla store in San Diego, USA, indicating the trailer weight and maximum payload. What is striking is that these are different numbers than we already know.
The towing capacity of the Tesla Cybertruck
Tesla’s American website states that the Cybertruck has a payload of up to 3,500 pounds (1,585.5 kilograms). According to the website, the truck can tow 14,000 pounds (6,342 kilograms). And that is really an extreme amount.
It is noticeable that different weights can be read on the poster. For example, the maximum payload would be 2,500 pounds (1,132.5 kilograms) and the Tesla Cybertruck cannot tow more than 11,000 pounds (4,983 kilograms).
The competition
Apparently Tesla had to adjust its promises regarding towing capacity and loading capacity. The fact that the poster is not a version of the Cybertruck with less power, but rather the top model, becomes clear when we compare the numbers with the competition. The most powerful version of the Ford F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 pounds (4,530 kilograms), and the Hummer EV pickup can tow up to 8,500 pounds (3,850.5 kilograms).
The Rivian R1T can tow the same as the Tesla. Compared to the competition, a Tesla Cybertruck still performs well and the pick-up can be one of the strongest electric vehicles in terms of towing capacity. In America, however, the electric car cannot yet compete with the best gasoline-powered tractors. Pickup trucks like a Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD or a Ford F-350 Super Duty can tow more than 20,000 pounds (9,060 kilograms).
