The new Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has never completely disappeared from the gray masses. Imported gray on a gray license plate, it was a great opportunity to drive a nice company car, even with a 707 hp supercharged V8 if desired, to keep people busy. However, a plug-in hybrid powertrain has been developed for the latest generation, which has been on the market in the USA since 2021, whose low paper emissions finally make it attractive to register it with a back seat and associated doors.
With a 17.3 kWh battery pack, a full four-wheel drive with a short range and every conceivable comfort feature on board, it’s no wonder that the Jeep Grand Cherokee weighs almost 2.5 tons empty. The result is that the 145 hp and 245 Nm electric motor has a hard time driving the car forward under its own power. Quiet chugging in the city is fine, but if even a little power is required, the 272 hp four-cylinder turbo has to step in. Although it is powerful enough, it doesn’t seem particularly elegant in terms of sound or vibration.
Consumption and range
In practice, an average of around 40 kilometers remains of the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s promised 48 kilometers of electric range, after which consumption for mixed driving is 9.4 liters per 100 kilometers. Even with good constipation, it is not easy to get the overall average below 1 in 15 if regular trips longer than around 80 kilometers are made.
