Why the new Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally is no longer an SUV

Half of the Netherlands drives a car that, at first glance, can climb Kilimanjaro. SUVs look so tough, but in most cases they can’t cross a mud puddle. In that sense, this Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally isn’t an SUV, because it can actually drive off-road.

What Ford wants with this Mustang Mach-E was not entirely clear to us at first. The wheels, all-terrain tyres, rear spoiler and distinctive tow-eye all suggest this is a real rally car, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally is not a rally car

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally is a rally-inspired electric SUV, as we read in the attached press release. There are very special sports seats in it, but it certainly doesn’t have a slimmed-down racing interior.

Here, too, Peugeot, Polestar, Renault and Ford seem to have agreed in advance, because the Mustang Mach-E Rally is also shown in camouflage. Like the Polestar 5, it will compete at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

With the Mustang Mach-E GT powertrain?

“The Mustang Mach-E offers the freedom and driving pleasure of the Mustang, but now with zero emissions,” said Darren Palmer of Ford. We don’t know what he means by the phrase “now” because the Mach-E has been around for quite some time is on the market.

“With the Mustang Mach-E Rally, we are now giving our customers the freedom to drive off the tarmac and off the beaten track,” added Palmer. We are very curious to see how many buyers/leasing drivers will actually do this in the future.

Ford hasn’t said anything about the Rally’s powertrain, but we’re expecting it to make 487 horsepower, just like the all-wheel-drive Mach-E GT. At least that would fit his rally theme.
